Pre Mesa Competitions
Pre Mesa is an annual competition focused on motivating students to explore different STEM fields. Below you will find the different competitions you can participate in as well as their rules. These diverse paths will allow you to hone your skills in the field of your choice. Tentative date March 5th, 2022.
Cargo Glider2-3 members per team (9/10 & 11/12 divisions)
Captains: Sean Wong & Johnson Chen Students will design and construct a glider with a payload that, when launched by a Launching Mechanism, flies through the air, goes over an obstacle and lands on a target.

Coding Solutions (Virtual)1-2 members per team (No divisions)
Captains: Sean Wong & My Duong You have been invited to a virtual interview for a software company to obtain an internship. As part of the interview process they would like to test your knowledge virtually on programming fundamentals using the Python 3 programming language.

Crime Scene Science2-3 members per team (No divisions)
Captains: Zulian He He Student will collaborate using your knowledge of science to solve this new mystery working your way through the crime scene using your knowledge of Punnett squares, blood, and plant cells including designing and constructing a DNA model that tests your science skills.

Mesa Think Tank (Virtual)2-3 members per team (9/10 & 11/12 divisions)
Captains: Ben Fan & Aaron Phu Have you ever wanted to pitch a MESA Competition to MESA staff/judges? Here is your chance! We are looking for a team that has an innovative STEM Competition that can be piloted in the next MESA Day Competition.

MESA Machine
2-3 members per team (9/10 & 11/12 divisions)
Captains: Johnson Chen & Jackson Chen Students will design and construct a device that utilizes four to eight different sequential and dependent actions from four different energy/simple machine categories that will ultimately launch a vinyl kick ball to land the closest distance to a target in the greatest amount of time. Students must design their device to be transported by bus or car.

Math Escape Room (Virtual)2-3 members per team (No divisions)
Captains: Justin Wang & Andy Tang Students will work in teams of two to three to solve challenging performance and/or problem-based real-world problems using general mathematics skills and techniques. Through collaboration, teams will solve a series of non-routine problems requiring creative deductive and reasoning skills to “unlock” the door to the MESA Escape Room.

Moon Base2-3 members per team (9/10 & 11/12 divisions)
Captains: Ariel Peng & Shimin Chen Your task is to design a safe structure to house these new moon-based research activities. Students will design and construct an original structure using only recycled cardboard that can withstand the highest amount of impact, is lightweight, and meets the specific size requirements
